What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic Services

Diagnosis, Treatment and Management of Conditions

Chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession that specialises in the diagnosis, treatment and overall management of conditions that are due to problems with the joints, muscles and nerves, with particular focus on the spine.

We assess body performance through FMS and SFMA testing, before we recommend the appropriate treatment plan. This will usually consist of spinal adjustments, soft tissue work and exercises.

Safe, Gentle Adjustments

Chiropractic treatment mainly involves safe, often gentle, specific spinal adjustments to free joints in the spine or other areas of the body that are not moving properly. This impaired movement can cause a decrease in functionality of the spine and the body as a whole, leading to possible nerve interference. Chiropractic works to restore the integrity and health of your nervous system by improving how it functions, giving your body the best chance to repair and regain health.

Additional Techniques

Alongside our hands-on adjustments, chiropractors may use a variety of techniques including the application of ice or heat, Cox® flexion-distraction and ART® (Active Release Techniques), and may also prescribe exercise and give advice about posture and lifestyle.

How A Chiropractor Can Help You

Treatment For A Range Of Conditions

Chiropractors are best known for treating physical pains, eg. back pain, neck pain and headaches. On top of this, patients also consult chiropractors regarding a range of other related conditions, some of which involve joint, muscle and nerve problems.

Mostly, chiropractors work with the spine and surrounding joints to allow your nervous system to work better.

Understanding Your Goals

Chiropractors honour your health goals. Whether you want short-term relief or long term progressive check ups, we are ready to listen, provide choices and support you and your family in achieving your individual health and wellbeing objectives.

A Simple Check-up

Many causes of spinal problems cannot be avoided in our modern lives. Having your spine checked for any mechanical dysfunction by a chiropractor is really like having your teeth checked for cavities by your dentist or sending your car to the garage to be serviced by a mechanic.

We will discuss with you how often these check-ups might be appropriate. This is entirely patient dependent. How long you choose to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you.

Shared Responsibility For Outcomes

At ProHealth Chiropractic, we also advise on taking your health into your own hands by moving, standing and sitting correctly. Combining adjustments with exercise and adaptations to your diet will give your body the best chance of functioning to its optimum level. Just as there are normal values for blood pressure and cholesterol, there are normal values for both posture (structure) and movement (function) of your spine and many families utilise chiropractic services on a regularly basis.

What To Expect

On Your First Visit

When you meet us for the first time, we will start the consultation with a discussion about you, your health and your reasons for seeking chiropractic care. Your details are completely confidential. No one else will be allowed to see your notes without your permission.

Please don’t be surprised that we will ask you for a great deal of information at that initial session, not just about the pain or complaint that may have brought you to the clinic, but also about your past health history.

Some of the questions may appear irrelevant, but they are extremely important to your chiropractor. To ensure that chiropractic care is appropriate for your condition, we will need to establish your overall health picture and if chiropractic appears not to be suitable for you, we will refer you to your GP or relevant specialist.

The detailed review will be followed by an examination during which we will carry out various chiropractic, orthopaedic and neurologic tests. A ‘Selective Functional Movement Assessment’ (SFMA) will also be performed to assess the body’s abilities and any limiting factors in reaching full potential.

The chiropractor will also advise you if any type of diagnostic imaging, laboratory or other diagnostic tests are necessary to complete your examination. Your examination results will be studied and then reported to you. An appropriate treatment plan to achieve your health objectives will then be discussed and recommended to you.

On Subsequent Visits

With a lot of chiropractic care, the spinal dysfunction and muscle pain is unlikely to clear within one session.

You will be advised on the appropriate care schedule for your individual care based on severity and duration as well as several other factors.

Those returning for chiropractic care are advised to wear shorts and a light T-shirt in order to enable us to provide a full assessment and effective treatment.

Why We Focus On The Spine

Consisting of your brain, spinal cord and all the smaller nerves, the nervous system controls the function of all your cells and organs, everything from your breathing and digestion to the way you sense the environment around you.

Your nervous system is in fact the most vital system in your body, responsible for controlling all other systems, as well as relaying and integrating messages between the brain and other parts of the body.

The spine is the physical structure for protecting the spinal cord. The spine with its joints can move and adapt to aid function, however if these adaptations cause misalignment it can lead to a disruption of the nervous system messages. Compromised nerve messages, to or from your brain, may lead to parts of your body not working as intended.

Correcting these areas of compromise will allow the nerves and spine to work better, reducing the likelihood of pain and problems in the future
